When you think of a ‘prophet’, you might think of a sort of fortune teller, a predictor of the future. In the Hebrew scriptures, prophets are not really ‘predictors’ - as they are - what Walter Brueggemann calls: “imaginers of an alternative reality.” Embedded in complex socio-political situations, they stepped outside of the dominant thinking of their moment, and imagined an alternative reality and invited/challenged their listeners to join in their commitment to that new reality. The so-called ‘Minor’ prophets are a series of 12 very short prophetic books - only ‘minor’ in length.
